Words Per Minute (WPM) Calculation

Our WPM calculation follows the industry standard used by professional typing tests and employers.

Standard Formula

WPM = (Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time in Minutes

Key Points:

  • 5 characters = 1 word (industry standard)
  • Only correct characters count toward WPM
  • Spaces and punctuation are included
  • Backspaces don't count as negative characters

Example Calculation

Characters typed: 300

Time: 1 minute

WPM = (300 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 60 WPM

Accuracy Levels

95-100%:Excellent
90-94%:Good
85-89%:Fair
<85%:Needs Practice

Accuracy Measurement

Accuracy is calculated as the percentage of correct characters typed compared to total keystrokes.

Accuracy Formula

Accuracy = (Correct Characters ÷ Total Keystrokes) × 100

What Counts as an Error:

  • Typing the wrong character
  • Missing characters
  • Extra characters
  • Incorrect spacing or punctuation

Tips for Improvement

Expert advice to help you become a faster, more accurate typist

Speed Tips

Practice Regularly

Consistent practice is key. Even 10-15 minutes daily can significantly improve your speed.

Focus on Rhythm

Maintain a steady rhythm rather than typing in bursts. Consistency beats speed.

Use All Fingers

Learn proper finger placement and use all ten fingers for maximum efficiency.

Accuracy Tips

Slow Down to Speed Up

Focus on accuracy first. Speed will naturally increase as you make fewer errors.

Look Ahead

Read ahead while typing to anticipate upcoming words and characters.

Correct Mistakes

Use backspace to correct errors immediately rather than continuing with mistakes.
